Michael VIII Palaeologus, 1261-1282. Trachy (Bronze, 27 mm, 2.09 g, 6 h), Thessalonica. Winged partriarchal cross on base and three steps. Rev. On the left, Michael VIII, crowned, wearing imperial robes and holding labarum in his right hand; on the right, St. Demetrios, nimbate, in military attire, holding spear in his left hand; both holding between them sword; in field between them, large eight-pointed star. DOC 161. SB 2301. Extremely rare. Areas of weakness and with a flan crack, otherwise, about very fine.
